Maria A. Inskeep, Letter to Fanny Giles (1808)

New York Novembr. 13 1808

My dear Fanny,15

I have been long your debtor for a very kind and comfortable Letter – Yes! and is it possible I say to myself that my beloved Sister is gone!!!16and shall I never more in this world behold her again? Oh, I could scarcely realize it, if my sable dress did not every day convince me of the sad reality – if I could only have been with her in her Last moments, to hear her sweet conversation, to press her hand and kiss her palled cheek, I think I could have given her up with more composure – but that melancholy pleasure was debar'd me – Yes, my dear Sister, would you believe it I envied you, and dared to murmur at the divine will of our Heavenly Father, in that I sinned most grievously, but 'O Lord lay it not to the charge of thy weak servant & make me cheerfully submission to thy will and thankfull that I had such a sister to love, One whose piety, fortitude, and resignation, was an example few can imitate – why one so amiable and lovely was taken from us, God knows best, all his dispensations serve the end of his providences, and they must be for our good, if we have evidences in our own souls that we are better for our afflictions – let us then my dear Sister try to walk in his ways, and then our most pensive and solemn thoughts / will be our best; and soon calm all our tumultuous ones, which the cares and of this world lead to – and sincerely wish both you and I may experience the sweetness of such meditations; and that through Gods assistance we shall be prepared to meet our dear sisters and darling Brother in the mansions of eternal blessedness.

We have all had bad colds, the Children was very unwell last week, but are now as well as usual. I have been very much afflicted with sore Eyes, they are now better by very weak. I have received the Frock by Mrs. Dixon, for which I thank you; it is very beautiful and you know not how highly I prize it. I wish you could see my little Phebe she is a lovely little creature, and begins to take a great deal of notice, and is very good. I have no trouble with her – I think she knows Sarah who is quite a handy little nurse she will hold and play with her for an hour together. Grandma is not well, poor Old Lady, she see but very few comfortable days; I think she suffers very much in this world & I sometimes think she will not live the winter through. Sophia and the rest of your New York Friends are all very well. Aunt Maria has another Daughter, and is bravely about an hour
